Scorpio Moon

Scorpio.
Tell someone who knows astrology that Scorpio is prominent in your chart, and they will either smile knowingly or run away - or both.  A sign of intensity and extremes, Scorpios do nothing halfway, and heaven forbid if you ever do anything to cross them.  They have stingers for a reason.
My moon sign is Scorpio, one of the more difficult lunar placements.  I have a love/hate relationship with my moon sign; while it has its challenges, it has also given me great gifts.  One thing is to be sure - living with this moon sign has not been easy!  If Scorpio is prominent in your chart, then you know what I mean...here's an excerpt from Astrodienst:
  • Fixed Water
  • Personal Ruler: Mars
  • Transpersonal Ruler: Pluto
  • Detriment: Venus
  • Fall: Moon
As a fixed water sign, Scorpio is like a very deep, dark, still well. The phrase 'still water runs deep' is particularly appropriate here, because although the surface of the water may be calm, there is always a strong sense of the mysterious and unknown and often frightening depths lying below the surface. At the bottom of the well lies rotten, decayed and decaying detritus which all of us, unless we are Scorpios, would rather not think about. There is an intense magnetism about Scorpio, and people tend to be either strongly attracted or strongly repelled by its atmosphere of inscrutability and controlled power. As a water sign, this magnetism is generated by a powerful emotional intensity which Scorpios will bring with them when they walk into a room, creating a change or a shift in the atmosphere.

Certainly, there is nothing superficial about this sign, and Scorpios never take life lightly. This sign does not share the tidal nature of Cancer or the fluidity of Pisces. Its stillness, darkness and depth make it the most emotionally intense sign of the zodiac. This is a sign of extremes, ice or fire, black or white, never anything in between, and there is often a kind of obsessive intensity which can be either very destructive or immensely creative. Normally secretive, private and controlled, Scorpios, like volcanoes, will either be dormant or active. It is unlikely that you will ever get anything at all out of a dormant Scorpio - there is an impenetrability and a stillness, and even Scorpio eyes will give nothing at all away. This does not mean, of course, that nothing is happening below the surface. Quite the opposite. Scorpios are processing emotions all the time, and storing up impressions and experiences which will be used later. As a very controlled sign, Scorpio can afford to wait. Scorpio has a prodigious memory, a penetrating mind and a compulsion to probe under the surface. Detectives, depth psychologists, doctors and even potholers, and people working in submarines, 'under the surface', often have an emphasis of planets in Scorpio.

Mozart - Requiem

I'm sure many of you are familiar with this glorious piece of music. I had the great pleasure to hear this performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra last year. One of my favorite classical pieces, it never fails to put a chill up my spine.  Light the candles and enjoy.

Arles, France & Van Gogh

"To do good work one must eat well, be well housed, have one's fling from time to time, smoke one's pipe, and drink one's coffee in peace." ~Van Gogh

I'm very drawn to the work of Van Gogh.  His art is visceral and unapologetic (also revealing an unfortunately tortured soul), yet sublimely beautiful and peaceful at the same time. Following his stay in Paris, he moved to Arles in the south of France where some of his most well-known works were created.  Two of my favorites - "Starry Night over the Rhone" and "Cafe Terrace at Night" - were painted there.  I'd love to visit Arles one day; it must be spectacular at night.  Do comment if you've been there.

Visit here for a brief biography about Van Gogh and more information about his life and work.

Florence & The Machine

I recently discovered the talented British singer Florence Welch.  She has a gorgeous, rip-your-heart-out kind of voice that is best listened to after 10:00pm.  Loudly.
What she says of her music:
Let’s talk about magic. Because music, at its best, is a kind of magic that lifts you up and takes you somewhere else. “I want my music to sound like throwing yourself out of a tree, or off a tall building, or as if you’re being sucked down into the ocean and you can’t breathe,” says Florence Welch. “It’s something overwhelming and all-encompassing that fills you up, and you’re either going to explode with it, or you’re just going to disappear.”
Let me know what you think...find her here.

The Raven ~ On Sale!

One of my newest creations in my after dark line, this is the last one currently in stock, so I've marked it down to $37.00.  I'd love for it to find a nice home. :)  Find it here: The Raven.  Will arrive gift boxed with black ribbon!

Candles

What would the night be without them?  Whether just a single flame or as part of an elaborate altar, there is a primal draw to the warm, dancing light that only candles can produce.  They can help you feel relaxed, contemplative, or amorous...they're one of the best things about evenings.

Totem Guides ~ Black Panther

A few years ago, I had a series of vivid dreams.  Each of them had one thing in common:  a black panther...
The first dream began while I was walking in the woods with my lover at dusk.  I saw the panther approaching us from the side, and I initially felt afraid.  But, as the panther drew closer, I began to feel comforted and safe.  The big cat walked beside us for a few moments, then turned and sprinted toward the trees.  He looked back at me once.  I'll never forget those haunting eyes.

In the dreams that followed, I was no longer afraid when I saw the panther; I was relieved.  I felt as if I were being watched, guarded, and protected.  Curious about what these dreams meant, I did some research and discovered that I was dreaming about my "totem animal".

Many different animal spirits come and go at different points in our lives, and they often come to us in our dreams.  They reveal things we need to learn about ourselves or provide us with something we need.  However, we all have one specific Totem Animal that stays with us for life.  Mine is the Black Panther.  Here is what I learned about this spirit guide, and what it reveals about me:

The Panther is a very ancient and powerful spirit guide. Their power is lunar (moon). In Egyptian rites a panther tail was worn around the neck or waist to help protect and strengthen the individual. Panther has been a symbol of the "Argos of a Thousand Eyes," who protected the heifer IO whom Zeus loved. After his death, the eyes were moved to the feathers of the peacock.
Black Panther's Power Includes astral travel, guardian energy, symbol of the feminine, death and rebirth, understanding of death, reclaiming ones power, ability to know the dark, aggressiveness and power without solar influence, reclaiming Power.

Panthers are generally loners, extremely comfortable with themselves and are often drawn to other solitary people. Women with Panther, Leopard or Jaguar power animals frequently find themselves raising their children alone, whether it be through divorce or circumstance. People with this power animal can develop clairaudience, the ability to hear communications from other forms of life or dimensions. They must trust their thoughts and inner voice/visions as they are based in reality. This is an animal guide to assist you on your path, sometimes in the form of a real person such a mentor or teacher. The Black Panther is endowed with great magic and power, which will increasingly be experienced.
Panther holds the secrets of worlds that are unseen and are associated with lunar energies. Within the darkness of night resides the truth of creation. Black panthers have great mysticism associated with them. They represent the life and power of the night. They can show us how to welcome the darkness and rouse the light within it. Those with this power animal contain knowledge of a galactic origin, and have a responsibility to look after and respect this knowledge. Caution must be used when sharing it with others. When the student is ready the teacher appears, and vice versa. If the student isn't ripe the information given could trigger negative consequences.

Panthers possess acute sensitivity. The hairs that cover their lithe bodies, especially on the face, pick up subtle vibrations. This is symbolic for those with this guide. It is an indication of a need to pay attention to their feelings and honour the messages those feelings transmit.

Touch can be a significant path to explore to awaken ones concealed gifts. The black panthers sleek, smooth and sensual coat has been linked to sexuality. If panther comes into your life it may be asking you to resolve old sexual issues, or to embrace your sexuality fully.

When experiencing the presence of panther, one of their most striking features is their unblinking stare. It seems to see right through the body. Those with panther medicine can use their eyes as a healing tool and have the potential to heal on a cellular level.

Panther is a powerful guide to have, always bringing a guardian energy to those to whom it comes.

My research explained so many things ~ my fascination with all things dark and mystical, my connection to the moon, why I feel so comfortable being alone (I've been divorced for 16 years, and yes, did indeed raise my children alone), and why people have frequently commented on my "hypnotic gaze" (I also have the moon in Scorpio in western astrology, which enhances this trait as well).  The panther also appeared during a time when I was embarking upon the greatest love affair of my life.  Part of me was afraid to jump in, let go, and be vulnerable, but I believe the panther was trying to reassure me that I was safe with this man.  Three years later, we're still loving and growing together
Have you explored your animal spirit guide and its meaning?  I'd love to hear about your experiences.
